Team First

Both columns below were published by the athletic department's own site, which is worth knowing before reading them: this is the campaign talking about its own campaign.

That does not make the argument empty. It makes it a specific kind of argument, and one that recurs every autumn wherever a candidate plays for a team outside the sport's largest conferences. The case runs like this. An individual award is voted on by people who mostly did not watch the player live. What they saw instead was a number, a highlight and a narrative. A programme that leans into the campaign risks turning its quarterback into a product; a programme that refuses it entirely concedes the only channel it has. Team first is the line a school uses to stand in both places at once — to run the campaign and to disown the posture of running one.

Read the two pieces against each other and the seam shows. The same site that built a dedicated candidacy page also published, repeatedly, the claim that the candidacy did not matter. Neither statement is dishonest. Together they describe the actual position a mid-major finds itself in when one of its players is good enough to be noticed nationally.
